New Year’s Resolution
Or should I say “Doctor’s Orders?” I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes in the fall of 2017. I have a family history – my grandfather had diabetes, my dad developed it later in life and my sister is also pre-diabetic. I’ve seen what people can go through with this disease and when my doctor said it could be reversed if I lost weight, I said: Ok – I’m in. Six months later and 23 pounds lighter, I am no longer pre-diabetic.
Now, I’ve been a life long exerciser. I played sports in school, and continued with some form of exercise throughout my adult years – walking, biking, light running, swimming. I found it to be good stress relief and never really thought about exercise as a means to lose weight. It was just (mostly) fun. I have struggled with exercise in my 40s mostly because I’ve had some health struggles. So, when I found out I needed to lose weight, I focused more on my diet.
I am still searching for my favorite veggie. My favorites are still the ingredients contained in a garden salad, which is pretty boring and limited when you think about all the veggies out there. Though, through Sunbasket, I am discovering other vegetables and different ways to cook them. Kind of broadening my veggie horizons. I am discovering sweet potatoes and beets aren’t so bad if they’re roasted and sprinkled with rosemary. I just tried roasted baby broccoli and it’s pretty good.
One thing that has gotten me through the past few months is thinking “Yes – I want more of this, of course. But I’m going to stop. It’s not going anywhere – it’ll be there tomorrow.” Portions are really important. And I’m also treating my calorie budget like a money budget. It’s all about priority. If this dieting thing were easy, everyone would be skinny, right!? I just think mind over matter. Some days it’s easier said than done! I’m human – I have bad days. I also have good days and want to celebrate. I’m just learning to tone it down.
